Quarriers Homes, cottage parents, son escapes jail

No jail for kids' home sex abuse

Glasgow Evening Times, Friday 30/09/2005

A MAN escaped a jail sentence for sex offences he committed more than 30 years ago.

William Gilmore, 48, of Forrestfield Crescent, Newton Mearns admitted using lewd, indecent and libidinous practices and behaviour towards two girls and a boy.

Gilmore committed the offences over a three-year period from the age of 12-15 at Quarriers Homes accommodation in Glasgow where his parents were houseparents.

Judge Ian Pebbles QC placed Gilmore on the sex offenders register for five years and ordered him to perform 300 hours community service.

He said he had decided not to jail Gilmore because of his age when he committed the offences and the fact he has not offended since then.

Outside court one of Gilmore's female victims hit out at the sentence, saying: "He has ruined our lives. I thought he would get jailed".

His male victim said: "I don't understand how he could have treated kids who had lost their parents like that".
